My thoughts on Qassem Soleimani's assasination and the US-Iran crisis

Hey everybody, Sirloin here. As of now, I'm currently working on the next SWS stories, which means this is the perfect time to talk about something very serious: the US-Iran crisis, Qassem Soleimani, and other related topics. The main question(s) is: What started the crisis between the US and Iran, and why did the US authorize the assasination of Qassem Soleimani? (btw i need to put this article on private, otherwise khamenei will see this and he will murder me in my sleep)

To put it bluntly, since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, relations between the US and Iran had began to deteriorate since the US was a long-time supporter of the shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and that the newly-formed Islamic republic was antagonistic towards the US. Following Khomeini's rise to power, a series of affairs began during the beginning of the 1980s, starting with the Iranian hostage crisis, when militant students kidnapped American diplomats because they wanted the shah to be returned to Iran and executed. In another episode, Iraq, supported by the US, invaded Iran in which chemical weapons were commonly used (despite being sanctioned and banned by the United Nations and the Geneva Convention).

Fast forward to 2020, and then we have Soleimani's assasination. On January 3, 2020, just three days after New Year, Soleimani was killed when he was about to reach Baghdad Aiport as he was targeted by American drones; this was what sparked the crisis. The airstrike brought further divided opinions on both the Democrats and the Republicans. While the Republicans supported the airstrike calling it as a call to arms, Democrats, in contrast, strongly opposed the airstrike, saying that it was a step too far.

The death of Soleimani caused a very strong outcry in Iran. A couple of days after the airstrike, Soleimani's coffin was taken to Iran in which millions of mourners attended his funeral when his coffin reached Tehran on January 6. Because Soleimani was considered a national hero and martyr of Iran, he received Iran's first multi-city funeral and was the second largest funeral in Iran after Ayatollah Khomeini. Soleimani's successor exacted terrible revenge for the airstrike, which started with them firing rockets on Iraqi bases stationing US troops.

Opinion

Since I'm a Democratic supporter, I strongly opposed the Baghdad airstike because not only was the world on the brink of war, but also caused harsh reprisals following Soleimani's death and that it also caused World War 3 memes to become trending. I wish I pretended this didn't happen but for now, it had to be written in the history books. While Iran stood down on the airstikes and that Congress voted for Trump's war powers to be limited, all we could do is just sit down and observe what's going to happen. And yes, I am confident that this crisis will just be a repeat of the Iraq War and nothing else. As long as Russia and China doesn't intervene in the criris, World War 3 wouldn't have to happen with total destruction.

So anyway, I just hope I don't get drafted into the army and that tensions should cool down anytime soon. Now it's time to say thanks for reading this, and maybe we could meet again once the next SWS story, Amber's Bio, is coming up next. Woohoo! This is probably the first story that doesn't take place in my junior years of school.
